NEW SEASON Lamb Now Available!

Dartmoor Farmers New Season Lamb.....it's HERE!

So what’s all the fuss about?  What is this “New Season lamb?  What makes it so special?   Well…

The term “new season” is the clue. The first lambs ready for the market place are the ones which have grown quickest having had the best of everything. Young tender lamb is prized in all the United Kingdom’s lamb producing areas, and Dartmoor is no exception. Our lambs are born during late March and April, when the weather has improved and the grass starts to grow. By June or early July the first new season hill lamb from Dartmoor starts to hit the shops.

These will have had a more relaxed start in life, enjoying the Dartmoor Spring weather and grazing on species rich moorland pasture fields, giving the flesh extra flavour. Sheep on Dartmoor, as you can imagine, have to tolerate our wonderfully challenging environment. The harsh winters and the fact that they live on a large damp beautiful pile of granite can be a difficult world to live in.

As a result Dartmoor Farmers keep hardy types of sheep such as The Whiteface Dartmoor, The Scotch Blackface and the Cheviot which are built to thrive in these conditions. These sheep are sometimes cross bred with other native breeds like the Suffolk to get the earlier, good confirmation lambs. And so to the eating… "rose coloured flesh that’s meltingly tender"… "the meat’s flavour has developed more interesting notes"… "tender, succulent and so special".
