Tale of a Dartmoor Farmer - 26 June 2009

Dartmoor Farmers Sheep ShearingBusy shearing sheep for the last two weeks, and glad to see the back of that job for a while, backs been aching a bit. The sheep in around the farm are all done and the ones on the open moor can wait until the silage is done! The lambs are growing well, should be ready for our first pick in a couple of weeks.

Only a couple of cows left to calf from the spring bunch, and the bull went in this week! He has not been a happy chap of late, but you could almost see the smile on his face when he saw that horse box!

It is a great relief this year so far, not to have to constantly watch the weather! Having the sun on or backs makes us feel good and it's the same for the sheep and cattle. They seem to doo on sunshine this time of year.

The next job is the silage, we will go like hell for two or three days, the contractors will appear as if by magic, hover up all the grass and vanish as quickly, leaving a pile of grass behind. We'll hopefully get some round bales done and if were lucky some hay.....! Lets hope the weather holds.
